Emergency Road Closure

Following the reopening of the B2201 Selsey Road, after emergency works to repair potholes and a subsequent water leak, I am pleased to advise that Services 52 and 53 have now been reinstated and are operating between Chichester Bus Station and The Witterings.

We intend to operate all journeys in accordance with the published diversion route and timetable.

We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while the emergency road closure was in place.

Good news! Repairs to the B2201 have now been completed and the road has reopened.

The temporary traffic lights at the B2201/Green Lane junction are currently being removed and will be moved to their previous location at B2145/B2201 junction. With this, the diversion signs will also be removed and returned to their previous locations.

Thank you for your patience while these essential repairs were carried out.

Good afternoon

Since our previous update, further investigations have identified additional utility services in close proximity to the leaking water main. This has increased the complexity of the repair works and means additional coordination is required to ensure the repairs can be completed safely.

Portsmouth Water will continue work on site overnight to progress the investigation and repair activities. Once the water main issue has been resolved, we will be able to confirm the next steps and provide a clearer timeline for reopening the road.

We appreciate the continued patience and understanding of residents, businesses and road users affected by the closure. A further update will be provided tomorrow morning once additional information is available.

Good evening

I would like to provide a further update regarding the road closure on the B2201. Unfortunately, due to the narrow width of Green Lane and the roadside ditches, it is not possible to accommodate buses safely. As a result, Stagecoach will be suspending all bus services within the Manhood area until closure on B2201 is lifted.

Temporary multi-way lights will be moved to the Junction of Green Lane to assist vehicles.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause and appreciate your patience and understanding. We will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available.

 Kind regards

Road Closure – Stockbridge Road, Chichester

Essential gas main replacement works

This Saturday marks two weeks since we began our essential gas main replacement work on Stockbridge Road. Our engineers are making good progress, and we would like to thank locals and road users for their continued patience and support. We have also received positive feedback from residents and businesses located within the closure.

We’d like to provide a reminder - these works are essential to avoid further gas leaks and disruptive unplanned works.   The gas main being replaced provides gas to a significant number of properties and businesses; these replacement works will help support the resilience of the wider gas network.

The road closure is in place for safety reasons. Due to the restricted road space and the deep excavations required to complete this work, it is not safe to allow vehicle access through the closure.

Traffic congestion, traffic lights, and signage

We are aware the road closure is causing increased traffic on alternative routes, resulting in congestion and delays.

Working closely with West Sussex County Council, our traffic management team is continually reviewing the diversion route, and the traffic management measures we currently have in place on alternative routes. We are also aware of requests and suggestions for additional signage and temporary traffic lights. Please be assured that all feedback is carefully considered as part of our ongoing reviews and monitoring, any additional measures will only be introduced where they are safe, legal and support the flow of traffic on the wider road network.

While we appreciate that some local journeys may require the use of alternative roads, we continue to encourage motorists to follow the official signed diversion route wherever possible. We also advise road users to plan ahead and allow extra time for important journeys.

Unacceptable driver behaviour

Unfortunately, our workforce has experienced incidents of threatening and aggressive behaviour from some road users. We have also seen drivers ignoring road closure barriers and attempting to enter the work site, placing both themselves and our workforce at significant risk.

To help protect the public and our teams, additional security measures and CCTV monitoring have been introduced. Any dangerous, threatening, or unlawful behaviour will be reported to the police and relevant enforcement authorities.

We fully recognise the disruption this closure is causing and direct impact to residents and wider community.  We respectfully ask for the community's continued support, patience, and consideration while we complete these essential works safely and as quickly as possible.

We apologise for the inconvenience we are causing and thank you for your continued support.
